Every year The Whitney is proud to celebrate Memorial Day. Always observed on the last Monday of May; May 27th, 2024; this United States federal holiday is dedicated to honoring and mourning the U.S. military persons who lost their lives in the Armed Forces.

Did you know that the poppy flower is a symbol of Memorial Day? In 1915, Canadian soldier, John McCrae wrote the now-famous poem “In Flanders Fields,” after seeing poppies scattered throughout the battlefield. In November of 1918, Moina Michael wrote her own poem, inspired by McCrae’s, entitled “We Shall Keep the Faith.” In her poem, she discusses wearing “poppy red” to honor the deceased. With that, it became tradition to wear a single red poppy in remembrance of those who passed.

Today, poppies are not only a symbol of loss but also of recovery and new life. Be sure to wear a single poppy pin this Memorial Day. Learn more about how you can directly support veterans and their families through VFW’s Buddy Poppy Program

While we honor Memorial Day, the 3-day weekend also marks the unofficial start of summer. Many people take the opportunity to celebrate and relax with parades, beach visits, and barbeques. The Whitney welcomes you to spend Memorial Day as a part of our amazing community.

Attention, Earth advocates! The Whitney cannot wait to celebrate Earth Day 2024 with our community. We’re gearing up for a celebration of our beautiful planet and a call to action for a sustainable future.

This year, Earthday.org has provided a theme for this upcoming Earth Day: Planet vs. Plastics. Focusing on the urgent need to combat plastic pollution, and protect human and planetary health. With demands for a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040.

Plastics pose a significant threat to our environment, disrupting ecosystems and endangering wildlife. But together, we can make a difference. It starts with rapid phase-outs of single-use plastics, supporting a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and embracing innovative solutions for a plastic-free world.

Learn about some of the best ways to participate in Earth Day this year. First, boost your climate literacy and advocate for educating students about climate change. Second, contribute as little as one dollar to tree planting efforts.

Next, participate in global cleanup initiatives, or local events in Bethesda, MD to enhance your communities and natural spaces. Lastly, support sustainable fashion by shopping secondhand or purchasing from eco-conscious brands.

We encourage our residents to participate in Earth Day in as many ways as possible. In fact, The Whitney urges our community members to continue their Earth Day activities all year.

It is unfortunately not the most wonderful time of year because it is officially back-to-school season. The Whitney wants everyone to be prepared for another great school year and squeeze out any summer fun left! While it may be hard to believe, the summer season lasts until Saturday, September 23rd.

First and foremost, let’s get outside and enjoy the summer weather, in any way you can! Anything from walking around our beautiful Whitney property and taking advantage of our 24-hour fitness center, resort-style pool, and resident lounge. Take your workouts outdoors or just relax while soaking up some vitamin D.

After getting in your sunshine time, enjoy relaxing and the final lazy days of summer. Who says you can’t binge-watch your favorite tv show or movie trilogy? It’s the perfect time to rewatch The Hunger Games movies or catch up on those tv shows you’ve been meaning to watch. Whether you’re a reality tv fan and still haven’t watched The Traitors or finally catching up on the drama series Yellowjackets.

Also, take advantage of this remaining free time by planning to return to school. Get out the old backpacks, notebooks, and school supplies. Try reusing last year’s school supplies as much as possible. Even notebooks that aren’t filled up can be reused. These last few days of summer should be about getting in all those last-minute memories and doing what you can to prepare for getting back to school.

Summer is sadly winding down The Whitney residents. Now that the warm weather and the longer days are coming to an end, it’s time to squeeze in some last-minute activities to keep busy and entertained.

With the sun constantly shining, everyone has a little extra pep in their step. We all want some extra special things to do this season. Throw on a cute outfit, get out in the sun, and have some fun in Bethesda, MD.

A few lively outdoor activities include having a picnic, going to a parade, making tye-dye clothes, watching a game, or taking a hike. While spending time outside this season, bring out your inner kid and have a ball! Run through sprinklers, go down a slip ‘n’ slide, ride ferris wheels and roller coasters, or have a water balloon fight. Take advantage of the great outdoors by taking your workouts outside! Go for a relaxing stroll, an intense run, or meditative yoga.

Or maybe you prefer some relaxation. Of course, going to the beach and sunbathing, reading, or listening to music is always a good idea. If you can’t get to a beach then star-gazing, spa days, wine tasting, or even going tech-free for a day can all be incredibly relaxing!

Who’s ready to beat the heat? Don’t get us wrong we are loving the July summer weather! However, a cool refreshing treat can be just what you need right now. Using your state-of-the-art kitchen here at The Whitney, check out these delicious treats to make all summer long-  maybe even all year long!

Lemon Bars are always a great dessert for summer, as lemons are in season all summer long. With bright bursts of lemon, buttery sweetness, and crispy crust, these easy lemon bars will be irresistible.

Ice Cream Sandwiches can be customized and will be a delicious dessert. Make your own cookies or get them from the store. Take two cookies, put a scoop of ice cream in the middle, and maybe even roll it in sprinkles.

Dirt Dessert may not sound appetizing, but you will soon fall in love with it. With ingredients like Oreos, cheesecake filling, and gummy worms- there’s no way to go wrong.

Peanut Butter Icebox Cake is a no-bake dessert, meaning it is ideal for rising temperatures with no need to heat your oven. With a prep time of less than 15 fifteen, you might be making icebox cakes for the reason of the season.

Remember, if you don’t feel like making anything from scratch, an ice cream sundae bar will be just the thing you need!

After celebrating Mother’s Day in May, now is the time to pay the same respect to our paternal figures. To no surprise, Father’s Day is dedicated to honoring fatherhood and paternal bonds, respecting fathers and all father figures.

Especially in the United States, but worldwide, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was founded in the state of Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910. Dodd was inspired while listening to a sermon about Mother’s Day in 1909. She wanted to pay tribute to her father. A civil war veteran who raised six children alone after their mother passed in childbirth. Eventually, Father’s Day became a national holiday to be celebrated every third Sunday of June in 1972.

The best way to celebrate your Father this June is to plan a day around his favorite things and activities. If he loves being outside, plan a day of hiking, games, and a family picnic. If Dad loves to learn, go to a museum, take an ancestry test, or try an online cooking class. Or if your father loves unwinding and relaxing, make him breakfast in bed, go to the movies, and play video games together.

From your dad, grandfather, uncle, mentor, or whoever you are celebrating this June; make this Father’s Day one to remember while here at The Whitney!

Right before summer starts is a great time to refresh your space here at The Whitney. With warmer weather and longer days, it's the perfect time to brighten up your living space and make it feel open and airy. Between introducing brighter colors and softer textures, keep reading for plenty of renter-friendly apartment hacks to help you spruce up your space. All without breaking the bank.

One of the greatest and simplest things you can do is to bring in fresh flowers and greenery. Adding plants to your living space is an easy and affordable way to add a fresh touch to your home. You can place them on a windowsill or in a hanging planter to bring a natural element into your space.

An easy trick is to switch up your lighting. Swap out harsh overhead lights for softer, warmer light sources like table lamps and floor lamps. You can even add LED strip lights to your bookshelves or under your bed for a cozy, ambient glow.

Make sure to incorporate plenty of natural light. Opening up your blinds or curtains will let in more natural light, which will help make your home feel brighter and more open. You can also add mirrors to your space to reflect light and create the illusion of a bigger space.

At The Whitney, we want every single resident to feel comfortable, happy, and relaxed in their apartment home! We strongly encourage you all to use any of these simple and affordable tips and tricks to freshen up your space this May.

Invest in our planet. That is the theme for Earth Day 2023.

Earth Day is an event that takes place every year on April 22 that demonstrates support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, Earth Day now includes a wide range of events coordinated by EarthDay.org

Here are the six ways to do Earth Day this year. The first is to increase your climate literacy and promote the education of climate literacy for students. Second, end plastics. Plastic pollution is one of the most important environmental problems facing us. Third, donate as little as one dollar to plant a tree.

Next, use your voting power to protect our environment. Then, join a global cleanup campaign. Find a local event to clean up your communities, beaches, rivers, lakes, trails, and parks. Finally, shop sustainable fashion. Fight fast fashion by shopping secondhand or purchasing from eco-friendly stores and shops.

These are the six ways being focused on this year for Earth Day 2023. We encourage all of our residents to participate in Earth Day in as many ways as possible. Also, The Whitney urges our community to continue their Earth Day activities all year long.

For example, participate in a community cleanup every month, use only reusable water bottles, or shop at sustainable brands as often as possible.
